Voice over IP

Voice over IP is a technology where your voice calls are transported over the internet.  Mecklenburg Technology Group markets and installs this service.

For home/home offices, or for smaller offices where traditional Regional Bell service remains installed, VoIP is an economical way to add additional lines and save a small fortune on your local and long distance service.  For a single VoIP adapter installation, the VoIP adapter is placed downstream from your broadband terminal adapter and upstream from your router.  The VoIP adapter can then preserve its "Quality of Service" by reserving a portion of the available bandwidth to protect call clarity.  50 to 90Kbps, a very small fraction of a broadband connection's bandwidth is used to support call quality - not enough to be noticed.

For larger operations where multiple VoIP adapters or lines are employed, a different type of router is employed where two WAN ports connect you to the internet. We install the VoIP boxes downstream from the router, instead of sitting upstream of the router as in a single VoIP situation.  This class of router allows our network engineers to preserve that same slice of bandwidth for the VoIP adapter.  Additionally, with two WAN connections, the chance that you'll lose your voice telephone service due to a network outage is reduced significantly.  As long as both WAN connections are operable, a significant boost in internet performance can be enjoyed by the users in your office because this class of router aggregates the two internet connections.
